BLKOUT re-dyes fit-for-use (and perfectly fitting) clothing into timeless blk staples.

We believe trendy colors, silly stains, and faded favorites should not stop clothes from staying in your wardrobe for as long as possible.

Our proprietary re-dyeing method allows us to carefully transform “out” clothes into “new” blk staples.

The BLKOUT dye guide walks through which clothes to send us and the revival to expect.

THE DYE GUIDE

  • Cotton: Cotton is a great pick for dyeing, giving you a rich, long-lasting black.

Linen: Linen takes dye well and provides a natural, elegant black look.

Rayon: Rayon can be dyed, but results may vary depending on the fabric quality.

Blends with Natural Fibers: Fabrics mostly made from natural fibers, like cotton or silk, are usually easy to dye.

Silk: Silk dyes beautifully, offering a luxurious black finish.

Hemp: Hemp can be dyed effectively, providing a unique texture to your black garments.

  • 100% Polyester: Polyester doesn't absorb dye, so it's a no-go for our process.

Acrylic: Like polyester, acrylic doesn't take dye well and should be avoided.

Spandex: Spandex resists dyeing, often leading to uneven results.

Vinyl: Vinyl materials are not dye-friendly and should be left out of your dye projects.

Rubber: Rubber items won't take dye and can be damaged in the process.

Plastic: Most plastic-based materials do not absorb dye effectively.

Wool/cashmere: Wool fabrics can be dyed but may shrink or get damaged.

  • Blended Fabrics with Different Polyester Levels:

20-30% Polyester: Will dye black, but it may not be consistent.

40-50% Polyester: Closer to black, but it may still be muted.

60-70% Polyester: You'll likely get a dark gray, not deep black.

80-90% Polyester: Expect a challenging process with a less intense black.

Nylon: Nylon can be dyed but may not achieve true black.

  • Many clothes have elements (think the leather patches on Levi’s jeans) that cannot be dyed. We have a professional tailor that will remove and reapply these elements if you opt in. Further details include,

Sequins and Beads: Dyeing will likely damage or alter them. Consider removing or this piece is likely ineligible.

Leather Patches: Leather patches may shrink in the dye process; opt in to have them removed for best results.

Zippers and Buttons: Metal zippers and buttons won't dye and may slightly change colors in the process.

Thread: even 100% dyeable materials may still have polyester threads that will not dye evenly, potentially creating contrasting accents.

  • To ensure the most environmentally friendly BLKOUT process, we dye batches monthly, or once we hit our minimum. Once we’ve received your clothing, the process will take one month or less.

  • Shipping is simple. Mail us the clothing you want to BLKOUT and we will handle shipping to return the items back to you. You will receive a tracking number once your items are on the move!
